Cummins technology of Euro 6

One of Cummins most comprehensive development projects is progressing well at the Darlington technical centre. That project will deliver class-leading engine platforms that comply with the upcoming legislation, utilizing the latest technologies for pollutant and CO2 reduction.

Recently Cummins has disclosed its technology path to move its established ISB four- and six-cylinder engines to Euro 6 emissions regulations in 2013. The engines will use cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and variable geometry turbocharging allied with a new aftertreatment system which incorporates a diesel particulate filter (DPF) with a selective catalytic reduction (SCR).

At an event at its Darlington, England, plant, Cummins unveiled the next generation of its four-cylinder ISB4.5 engine for Euro 6 for trucks and buses. The company said the engine makes a "significant leap forward"  for Euro 6. Cummins also took the wraps off the next generation of the ISB6.7Euro 6 engine for trucks and coaches.

Euro 6 is the latest diesel engine emission legislations being driven by the European Commission. Since 1993, when the very first ‘Euro 1’ legislation was introduced for trucks and buses, the European Commission has regulated the amount of pollutants coming out of the tail-pipe of a diesel engine. As a result, over the past 20 years, European engine makers have invested heavily in developing new technology in the exhaust of all new diesel-engine.
