Zimbabwe to receive funds from India for power station refurbishment

The Indian government will partly finance the refurbishment of three thermal power stations in Zimbabwe which will cost the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) US$300mn

ZPC managing director, Noah Gwariro, said Bulawayo, Harare and Munyati power stations need upgrading to enhance generation capacity. WAPCOS, an Indian company that provides expert advice in the power sector, had conducted feasibility studies for the upgrade of the three power stations, he revealed.

Gwariro said in an interview, “We are looking for about US$300mn to refurbish the three power plants from which we will be securing 280MW.

“The Indian government would fund the rehabilitation at Bulawayo Power station while the local private sector would participate in the upgrading of the Harare Power station.”

The ZPC managing director indicated that Munyati would be leased by Essar Holdings, which acquired the Kwekwe-based Zimbabwe Iron and Steel Company from government in 2010.

Gwariro added the refurbishment exercise would take about two years to complete, adding that Harare Power station would be the first to be rehabilitated.
