Ghana and Japan sign agreement for power project

Ghana and Japan have signed an agreement worth US$14mn for the improvement of a power project in the Brong Ahafo and Northern Region of the West African country

The agreement for the Power Distribution System project was signed in Accra by Ghana’s foreign affairs minister Hanna Tetteh and Japanese Ambassador to Ghana Naoto Nikai.

Nikai observed that the Northern Region has lagged behind in terms of electricity distribution.

“Improving distribution of electricity will help reduce poverty and will go a long way to improve the quality of medical care and raise educational standards,” he said.

Nikai expressed hope that the project will motivate local people to engage in small and medium-sized businesses that require use of electricity and also promote local industries.

Tetteh said that Japan had remained a “true friend to Ghana” in providing various financial and technical assistances for the nation’s socio-economic development.

“The government of Ghana interprets these kind gestures as illustrations of the strong bond of friendship and mutually beneficial co-operation which exists between Ghana and Japan,” she added.
