Construction plans underway for the second container terminal at the port of Abidjan

Plans are under way to build a second container terminal at the main Ivorian port, Abidjan. Bollore, the French industrial group, plans to invest 496.3 million of dollars in wharf construction projects from the year of 2019.

This is based on Philippe Labonne, deputy chief executive officer of Bollore Transport and logistics. Côte d’Ivoire authorities want Abidjan's main port to be a regional hub.

Currently, the port is used to transport cocoa beans from the world's largest cocoa producer and is an important supply and export route for landlocked countries to the North. According to Philippe Labonne, the terminal project is scheduled to be launched in June or July next year.

"It's a matter of building platforms and building port equipment," Labonne said. The new terminal, which will be operational from June 2020, is funded by Maersk, the project's partner.

At the same time, port authorities are widening the canal through China's help, leading to the port, reaching a depth of 1600 meter, allowing larger ships to dock.

The project aims to increase wharf capacity from the current 1.2 million TEU (20-foot container unit) by about 15%.
