Morocco is set to establish 19 waste management centers by the end of 2019

The Moroccan government has announced plans to establish 19 landfills and waste recycling centers throughout the country and put them into operation by 2019.

Nezhal El Ouafi, Secretary of State for Sustainable Development, revealed the plans and said 11 of the 19 facilities to be built were already under construction and the rest would start in the coming months.

These include Beni Mellal Waste Recycling Center, located on 3.5 hectares of land. The plant is 30% complete and can handle 200 tons of waste per day. Waste will be used to produce biogas and food waste compost, while the remaining plastic and aluminum waste will be compressed for other uses.

In addition, the government has carried out training on waste classification and recycling agents, as the planned facilities require a large number of skilled labor to operate.

The training will start with 300 people, mainly from Beni Mellal, Tangier, Meknes, Marrakech and Ifrane. Beni Mellal Waste Classification and Recycling Center is expected to employ 62 employees.

The Secretary of State for Sustainable Development will fund the construction of the facility at an estimated cost of 5 million. Through the new device, the government aims to achieve a collection rate of 90%. Morocco has made significant progress in waste collection in recent years, up from 10% in 2008 to 37%.
