Rapid Impact Compaction

Nowadays, a soil improvement method that can densify a large amount of material in a short period of time is very popular because it helps to reduce working hours. Deposits of up to several meters thick soil can be complicated to compact homogeneously and accurately. For vibrating rollers or similar compaction equipment, it is required to compact sediment in several stages through alternating filling and compaction, which may be very time-consuming. Therefore, a compaction method that can provide performance to the required level within one stage is highly coveted. This is Rapid Impact Compaction (RIC) technology.

Rapid Impact Compaction (RIC) is an innovative ground improvement method involving a hydraulic hammer that is dropped on a steel footing placed on the ground surface to increase the bearing capacity of soils through controlled impacts. The general idea of this method is to drop a falling weight from a relatively low height onto a special foot assembly at a fast rate, while the foot remains in contact with the ground at all times.

The hydraulic hammer is mounted on a crawler excavator that provides the hydraulics for the hammer. The weight of the hammer ranges between 3 and 16 tonnes, while the diameter of the footing may vary from 1.0 m to 2.0 m.

The influence depth of rapid impact compaction (RIC) may reach at 2 to 8 meters but will strongly depend on the type of material to be compacted, the soil stratification, the size of the footing, the weight and stroke of the hammer, grid spacing, number of impacts per point, and so on.

Similar to dynamic compaction, gravels, sands, silts, industrial byproducts, tailings material, and landfills can be effective compacted by the RIC to increase the load-bearing capacity of foundations, to improve the ground bedding conditions for slabs, to reduce the liquefaction potential of soils, and to stabilize waste materials.

Rapid Impact Compaction - the fast, efficient solution for ground compaction.
