Liberia will build 50 km of coastal highway

The Government of Liberia and the Government of Liberia, the ECOWAS Investment and Development Bank (EBID), have signed a loan agreement of $50m for the construction of coastal highways.

According to Augustus J. Flomo, deputy finance minister for economic management, the loan is expected to be used to finance the 50 km highway between Barclayville-Klowne and Sustown in the southeastern corridor. Hon, Minister of Public Works of Liberia. Mobutu Nyepan said the first phase of the project would start in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, to Grand Cru County.

The Minister reiterated the Government's commitment to road development, and reiterated that its primary task was infrastructure development and that the key was road construction. "When I told you that the road between Bongbang, Bongzhou and Voinjama is under way in Lofa, and the road from the Coca-Cola factory to ELWA Junction is under way with other community road projects," he added.

The southeastern Highway Corridor from Buchanan, Grand Bassa County to Grand Cru County is considered a "landmark road project". The project will provide apprenticeship training for vulnerable youth in urban areas and support road upgrading and value chain growth using effective public works and community-driven development approaches, especially in rural areas. The project will also improve the efficiency of cash transfers to target families, including youth.

EBID's mission is to help create conditions conducive to the emergence of a strong, industrialized and prosperous West Africa, which is fully integrated into the global economic system in order to take advantage of the opportunities and prospects brought about by globalization.

The pro-poor agenda for prosperity and development aims to lift at least one million people out of poverty in the country.
